As one of the characteristics of Japanese personal pronouns, they are\nrarely used in TV news programs or newspapers. Including this linguistic phenomenon,\nTodoroki (1998) compares personal pronouns in Japanese with those in English, which\nprovides an analysis of personal pronouns based on the theory of territory of information\ndeveloped in Kamio (1990) and proposes a functional constraint on the occurrence of\npersonal pronouns in Japanese.\nOn the other hand, there are some profound changes in the language used in Japanese\nTV news programs, which are not found in Japanese newspapers. For example, elements\nwhich has an important role of identifying the main point of the news at hand are often\nmoved rightward in those programs (Todoroki 2015). Therefore, the language used in TV\nnews programs shows different characteristics from that in newspapers.\nThis article considers whether or not there is a change in the use of personal pronouns in\nJapanese TV news programs and newspapers. Although the language used in TV news\nprograms shows a variety of different characteristics from newspapers, it has not been\nchanged concerning personal pronouns. They are still rare both in TV news programs and\nin newspapers.
