The aim of this study is to develop a teaching method that enables us to improve the communicative English skills of students gradually. As a part of communicative English teaching, we used films which had socially and culturally valuable content to increase both the quantity and quality of students’ English writing. The procedure is as follows: We select one film and give a brief explanation of the background of the film before showing students a part of it. After viewing the film partially, students are given a topic concerning the film and told to try to write an English essay which is as long as possible. At the end of the semester, we investigated whether and how their English skills improved, and how the students viewed the use of visual-aids in English classes through questionnaires. It was shown that essays written got longer and had more meaningful content when compared with those written at the beginning of the semester. In addition, questionnaire results showed that most students had a positive opinion of films as teaching materials.
