The aim of this study is to develop a teaching method\nthat enables us to improve the communicative English skills of students gradually. As\na part of communicative English teaching, we used films which had socially and\nculturally valuable content to increase both the quantity and quality of students’\nEnglish writing. The procedure is as follows: We select one film and give a brief\nexplanation of the background of the film before showing students a part of it. After\nviewing the film partially, students are given a topic concerning the film and told to try\nto write an English essay which is as long as possible. At the end of the semester, we\ninvestigated whether and how their English skills improved, and how the students\nviewed the use of visual-aids in English classes through questionnaires. It was shown\nthat essays written got longer and had more meaningful content when compared with\nthose written at the beginning of the semester. In addition, questionnaire results\nshowed that most students had a positive opinion of films as teaching materials. This\nstudy shows the use of visual-aids in English classes has promise to improve students’\ncommunicative English skills, especially for students whose skills are developing much\nmore slowly than advanced-level students.
