The purpose of this paper is to show how student class observations can create onthe-job training opportunities for elementary school teachers through student
reflection and interviews with the elementary school teacher.
With the 2020 revision, the new Course of Study includes a Foreign Language
(English) subject as part of the elementary school curriculum. Because of this revision,
the necessity to train teachers of foreign languages has increased. On the other hand,
the goal of the Core curriculum of Foreign Language was to create a standardized
teacher training course throughout the country that includes classroom visits.
The author has introduced class visits in the English teacher training course to create
opportunities for students to experience real English classes in person. Moreover, these
class visits offer a meaningful exchange between elementary school teachers’ on-thejob training and university students interested in pursuing careers in education. To
determine the viability of class visits, an interview with an elementary school teacher
who allowed university students to observe his class was conducted. The analyses of
the interview suggest that class visits provide valuable learning potential for the
students as well as the school teachers.
